In a large city like Paris, where most of the housing stock is existing, where one-bedroom apartments are a common type, and where land scarcity and high land prices are a reality, the solution must emerge from a combination of housing-level and community-level thinking. We have developed a pilot kitchen that will allow both group cooking and hosting a large number of guests to share a meal. The project revolves around two central elements: A table on a rack system that allows the table height to be adjusted according to the activity (dinner, cooking workshop, etc.). This space is modular. It can be transformed into a dining room thanks to the table’s adjustable height and the flexible lighting. This allows a group to prepare dinner in the late afternoon and enjoy it in the evening.
